Andrew Love Neff was born at Crescent, Salt Lake County, Utah, on 17 February 1878. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in 1902 and received his Ph.D. from the University of California in 1918. Between degrees, he married Lauretta Snow in 1906. He served as principal of three high schools, then from 1919-1936 he was a member of the faculty at the University of Utah.
